Welcome to 2016! It’s a new year, with new potential for opportunities to love and care for our community with the Gospel. It is exciting to think about what God is doing, and what He will continue to do, in and through our body this coming year! As we continue to labor for the Gospel, we find that there are lot more things on our calendar than there used to be! So, I thought it may be nice to make an “e-newsletter” of sorts here on the blog page of the website. Here, you will find some important things for each month. First, we will talk a bit about where the teaching ministry is headed. Second, we will highlight key events for the month of February. Finally, we will key in on one ministry area for the month and give some specific prayer requests for this team as they labor for the Gospel!
- Teaching minstries – Sunday morning sermons will be continuing in James 3, 4, and 5 as we wrap up our series James: Tools of a Working Faith. Sunday school for adults will also be wrapping up our almost year-long study of the major doctrines of Chrisitianity. Sunday evenings we are preparing to move to a small-group ministry format, which we will be calling Grow Groups, so we will spend some time on the nuts and bolts of discipleship through small group ministry. Children’s ministry classes will be moving through Jesus as the Good Shepherd, Jesus visiting Mary and Martha, The parable of the prodigal son, and Jesus healing the ten lepers. One story each week will give our little ones more insights into just how good Jesus is to us.Our student ministry classes continue their discussion of 1 Peter.
- Key events – February seems a busy month! February 12 is Winter Jam at Bons Secours Wellnes Arena. We will be meeting at the church at 1 PM, and won’t be back until late that night. Come prepared for cold weather; we will be standing outside in line for about 4 hours! The following day, February 13th, there will be a hot dog sale for World Hunger Relief from 11 AM – 1 PM. February 24th, we will be giving out Laundary Detergent from 6 -7 PM for any families that may have needs for it. Finally, February 26th-27th is the Multiplying Disciples Summit at The Church at Cherrydale in Greenville, SC. Admission is $15 per person, childcare is provided.
- Ministry of the month – The Women’s Missionary Union is the means by which our church is educated and mobilized for missions, both domestically and globally. They meet once per month to discuss key areas of missions, and provide aid for many key events throughout the year. As a church, we support four misssionaries, three international and one North American Church Planter. The WMU maintains relationships with these missionaries and keeps the church informed about key events in their life, prayer needs, and any other need that may arise. Personally, my current favorite thing about the WMU is that they are a group of ladies that are passionate about missions and love one another, and there is a wide range of ages in the group. I am proud of what they do, and love the fact that our WMU shatters the image of it being a meeting place for senior adult ladies. If you are interested in learning more or jumping in, catch up with Kim Pierce, Ruth Anne, or Daria Pittman. They would love to share more about what God is doing there! To learn more about WMU in general, check out their website at www.wmu.com. Concerning prayer, please pray that these ladies would be encouraged as they labor on behalf of our missionaries and our church, that God would be pleased to continue to grow them spiritually, and that they would have clear vision about what God has called them to accomplish together.
There are lots of opportunities to love Slater through Slater Baptist Church! I hope to see you as we continue to glorify God in worship, grow in our love for Christ and one another through intentional discipleship relationships, and go into our community and around the world with the Gospel!
For His glory,
